Delight Of Jet Star

By Bonnie Smith
Twice The Delight
In 1989 a 13-year-old boy named Bo Smith and a 7-year-old mare named
Delight Of Jet Star achieved a Youth Superior Championship. At that point
Bo and Delight had been working together for five years and they were
virtually inseparable. They had grown and learned together and she would
do just about anything he asked. Needless to say, they had a bond – a bond
that would only grow stronger in the years to come.
When Bo graduated from high school and went off to college, Delight
assumed she was finished with all the showing and stuff. Ha! This
assumption was proven wrong on May 20, 2000 when I needed another horse to
compete with at a show to help my horse get more versatility points! I
asked Bo if he and Delight could help me out. He agreed and I entered them
in Reining and Western Riding, the two divisions in which I still needed
points. Delight had not been ridded in two years and she was fatter than
fat. When we got to the show, Bo asked if had entered them in anything
else. I said "no" but I knew what was on his mind. He wanted to compete in
Poles and Barrels. When I realized how much he wanted to do this, I
relented and went ahead and entered them. Though terribly out of shape and
competing against some very seasoned and conditioned competitors, Delight
managed to win both speed events. The adrenaline rush that Bo and I got
from those two classes was enough to convince us that we should try to go
for her Supreme Versatility Championship.
Proving that their bond was still intact and possibly even stronger, Bo
and Delight completed their quest for the Supreme Versatility Championship
in less than two years. They earned their final points on March 9, 2002 at
Nacogdoches, Texas. It was a real joy for a proud mother to watch her
now-grown son and his "old graying mare" make Tennessee Walking Horse
history as they became the first horse and rider team to win BOTH a Youth
Superior Championship and a Supreme Versatility Championship.
