Here are some great photos of
Shelby. She is doing very well and is truly the boss of the
herd. That is really no big surprise, is it?
Well, with all of our success
this year, we have had our trials! We had a perfect buckskin
filly born out of Fireball's Lady Lou and by Traveler. I was
in attendance of the birth. Things went ok until the baby
would not come out of the bag. As an Obstetrician and a horse
breeder, I jump right in, pull the membranes off and start
observing. Shelby was the hungriest colt with the strongest
suck reflex that I have ever seen. However, she had one
problem. She was breathing about 120-140 times a minute. Well,
after watching this and exhausting our wonderful local vet, we
decided to pack her up and take her to Purdue.
Let us just say, that Shelby has
become our million dollar baby! She stayed at Purdue for 2
weeks. AS you will see in the photos, she has had the works. I
would imagine that Shelby will have a long and wonderful
career here at Rise and Shine Walkers. Who would want this dog
gentle, spoiled rotten 150 pound brat that will grow up to be
an 1100 pound brat!
Well, let me cut to the chase.
She has Respiratory Distress Syndrome caused by premature
lungs or a lack of surfactant! This is very common in
premature human babies and require respiratory support. Well,
Shelby was taken in that night and the wonderful team at
Purdue just took excellent care of her. She ended up with a
tracheostomy and two chest tubes. The thing that drove Shelby
to survive was her incredible appetite and her passion for
life. Even when she was so weak that she could not lift her
head, she still would eat from a pan. The doctors and students
at Purdue fell in love. They called us an update twice a day
and stated that Shelby was one of their favorites. A couple of
them wanted to BUY HER!
Well, she is doing great! She is
like a big ol' lap dog that loves people. It is cute now but
won't be so cute in a few months. So, keep your eye on
Shelby's page. She will be a keeper.
The picture of the three ladies
around Shelby was the wonderful team of Doctors that saved her
life!!
I would like to give a great big
round of applause and gratitude for the doctors that took care
of Shelby, the lead doctor was Dr. Jackson! |
